Numerous cart road remnants carved into the rocky terrain on the outskirts of Karitsa bear witness to a busy transport system of roads passing through the area in ancient times. It is believed that these early roads connected Karitsa and surrounding villages with ancient Marios (in the vicinity of present-day Mari) as well as with the rest of Kynouria. The hub of the network in eastern Lakonia was ancient Geronthres (present-day Geraki). Research over many years reveals that these roads were part of an elaborate network of transport routes throughout the Peloponnese and mainland Greece. Professor Dr. Yanis A. Pikoulas (University of Thessaly, Volos:Dept HASA), a world authority on ancient road transport, has been involved in field study throughout Greece, tracing the tracks of the remnants of this ancient road system. His research in Lakonia began in the early 80s. During 2008, additional fieldwork was conducted for verification purposes, but more so to record the routes electronically using GPS. His book entitled “The Road Network of Lakonike” (in Greek) is forthcoming in 2010.
